A new perspective on American Independence
In celebration of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, to coincide with a new touring exhibition uncovering the forgotten, diverse histories of the American Revolutionary War. 'How We Lost America' reframes the American revolutionary conflict as essential British history, by unveiling the legacies of British lawmakers and female revolutionary thinkers who inspired America's democratic ideals. Featuring the satires of Horace Walpole and William Hogarth, the thousands of enslaved soldiers who fled to London for liberation following the 1775 Dunmore Proclamation, and the arson attack in Portsmouth which brought war to British shores, 'How We Lost America' tells the untold story of the complex British-American relationship.
